Sunny Joseph, President of Keralam Congress, expressed confidence on Monday that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will achieve a decisive victory in the upcoming Keralam Assembly Elections 2026 counting, set to commence shortly across the state.

Addressing the media, Joseph stated, “We are fully hopeful. We will win. This will be a repetition of the local body results. We are very confident that we will win. Number we cannot predict… Anti-people policies, Sabarimala, gold theft, all these are the key factors that are being discussed in this election by and large.” He added that the election outcome would reflect recent local body election results and the public sentiment prevailing against the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Responding to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) claims of securing a majority, Joseph remarked, “Naturally, they have to. Until the result, they will be claiming that they will be winning. When the result comes, they will be defeated.”

Counting will begin at 8 am with postal ballots, followed by the counting of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes from 8:30 am, with live updates provided via the ECINET platform. The process will be conducted under tight security at various counting centres, including the Mar Ivanios College campus in Thiruvananthapuram.

The state recorded a voter turnout of 78.27 per cent in the single-phase polling held on April 9. Exit polls have generally predicted an advantage for the Congress-led UDF, forecasting between 72 and 90 seats in the 140-member Assembly. The LDF is projected to secure between 49 and 62 seats, while the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to win a marginal share.

BJP leader V Muraleedharan expressed hope for a “positive verdict” favouring the NDA, citing development and governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi as key factors. Congress Member of Parliament Jebi Mather also expressed confidence in a UDF government, stating that the Chief Minister would be a Congress leader to be decided in consultation with the party high command.

The LDF, headed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is aiming for a rare third consecutive term following its historic victory in 2021, which ended Keralam’s traditional pattern of alternating governments.
