Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, emphasised the central government's commitment to empowering tribal youth through sports during her visit to the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) 2026.
The multi-discipline event, held across Raipur, Jagdalpur and Sarguja from March 25 to April 3, brings together tribal athletes nationwide, offering a national platform to display their skills.
Speaking on the sidelines of Day 8 of the Games, Khadse said the initiative specifically aims to involve young people from tribal communities and increase sports participation. “The Khelo India Tribal Games are being organised in Raipur with the objective of actively involving youth in sports. We are focusing on encouraging greater participation, especially among tribal youngsters,” she stated.
The minister noted that the Games serve not only as a competition platform but also play a vital role in identifying talent from remote areas. She explained that athletes showing exceptional promise will receive structured training at institutions managed by the central government. “This initiative is aimed at the holistic development of youth through sports. We are scouting new talent and will ensure proper nurturing and promotion of deserving players,” Khadse added.
Referring to national security efforts, she mentioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s Lok Sabha remarks concerning the elimination of Naxalism, noting that improved security conditions create new opportunities for youth development.
She further emphasised that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government is coordinating across ministries to direct young people's energy towards positive pursuits such as sports.
The first edition of KITG has attracted approximately 3,800 participants, including athletes, coaches and officials, competing across nine sports disciplines - seven medal sports and two demonstration sports - with 106 gold medals awarded. The event mascot, ‘Mor Veer’, symbolises courage, pride and valour of India’s more than 700 tribal communities.
