Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President KT Rama Rao raised concerns in the Telangana State Assembly on March 24 about delays in disbursing funds for the overseas education scheme, which has caused difficulties for students.
During the BRS government tenure, thousands of students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backwards Classes benefited from the Overseas Education Fund, allowing them to pursue higher studies abroad. Nearly 7,000 students received financial assistance of ₹20 lakh each under this scheme.
KTR noted that although the government announced the release of ₹303 crore for overseas education in October 2025, the funds have not yet been disbursed. Approximately 2,500 students are still awaiting financial support. Many students currently studying overseas have managed to pay their first-semester fees but are facing difficulties in paying for the second semester.
Students in the United States, London, and Germany have experienced significant financial distress and have appealed for assistance. Quoting these students, KTR stated: “We went abroad under the overseas education scheme during the BRS government, but we have not yet received the funds. Please raise this issue in the Assembly.”
He urged the government and the Chief Minister to regard this matter as a priority and to release the pending funds through a “green channel” to prevent disruption in students’ education. KTR emphasised, “This is not an unreasonable demand. It is a scheme already announced by the government.”
Additionally, he reminded the Assembly of the Maulana Abul Kalam Taleem-e-Tahfa Scheme announced by the Congress party, which remains unimplemented.
Separately, the Telangana State Cabinet has approved various legislative and policy measures addressing social regulation, welfare expansion, and institutional accountability. These decisions cover topics including hate speech, gig economy protections, and public infrastructure, reflecting an effort to respond to emerging social and economic challenges while strengthening governance frameworks.
