Lalit to contest men's 55kg Greco-Roman final at Asian Wrestling Championships 2026

Former U-23 Asian Championships bronze medallist Lalit will compete for the gold medal in the men's 55kg Greco-Roman category at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2026 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old secured an 11-3 victory against China’s Huoying Shi in the semifinals. Following this, Lalit will face 2025 Asian Championships bronze medallist Ikhtiyor Botirov of Uzbekistan, who defeated local favourite Ulan Uulu 5-3 in the other semifinal.

On the opening day, two Indian wrestlers will vie for bronze medals after losing their semifinal matches. Aman, competing in the 77kg Greco-Roman category, lost 13-3 to Zagreb Open gold medallist Ali Oskou of Iran. Aman had previously overturned a 1-4 deficit to win 6-4 against China’s Halishan Bahejiang in the quarterfinals. He will face South Korea’s Yeonghun Noh in the bronze medal match.

Meanwhile, 2020 Asian champion Sunil Kumar, competing in the 87kg Greco-Roman class, was defeated 0-8 by Gholamreza Farokhisenjani of Iran in his semifinal.

In other results, Sunny Kumar was eliminated in the qualification round of the 65kg Greco-Roman category after losing to Kazakhstan’s Saifulla Kurman. Joginder Rathee, competing in the men’s 130kg Greco-Roman class, was defeated in the quarterfinals by South Korea’s Minseok Kim. After Kim lost his semifinal match to Mirzazadeh of Iran, Rathee’s chance to compete in the repechage round ended.

Five more Indian wrestlers - Sahil (60kg GR), Sachin Sahrawat (67kg GR), Anil (72kg GR), Prince (82kg GR), and Nitesh (97kg GR) - are scheduled to compete on Tuesday.
