The District Administration of Mangan in Sikkim has reported a landslide above the Chyakoong River opposite OC Bhir during the night of September 5 and 6, according to information from the District Police and Chungthang Sub-Division Police.
A significant section of the hillside along the new road cutting of the Naga-Tosa Road in the Naga Forest area, opposite the Theng Tunnel near the confluence of the Teesta and Chyakoong Rivers, collapsed. This event resulted in a partial blockage of both rivers, temporarily obstructing the flow of the Teesta River.
Currently, the flow of the Teesta River remains normal despite water accumulating in both the Teesta and Chyakoong Rivers. Both rivers continue to flow partially. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far, and the extent of any property damage is under assessment.
Local authorities, including the SHO of Chungthang CP/PS and personnel at Theng CP, are maintaining continuous monitoring of the site. Water levels at Sankalang OP and Phidang OP are normal but exhibit muddy conditions. These locations have been instructed to monitor river water levels closely and report any significant changes immediately.
The Police Control Room has been alerted and tasked with warning vulnerable areas in the lower belt as a precaution. The District Administration of Mangan continues to oversee the situation at the landslide site and along the Teesta river belt. Further updates will be provided after a detailed assessment of the area.
