The 2026 Lanka Premier League (LPL) will commence on July 17 with a rematch of the 2024 final, featuring defending champions Jaffna Kings against runners-up Galle Marvels.
The opening match will take place under lights at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, the venue that hosted its first T20 International during this year's T20 World Cup. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm local time and will be preceded by an official opening ceremony to mark the start of the season, according to ESPNcricinfo.
The tournament is set to run from July 17 to August 8. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had initially announced a July 10 start, with matches planned across four international venues. The Sinhalese Sports Club Ground will hold five matches from July 17 to 19, before the competition moves to Dambulla and Kandy. It will then return to Colombo, at the R. Premadasa Stadium, for the knockout stages and the final. A reserve day for the final is scheduled for August 9.
The 2026 LPL will feature five teams representing Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Dambulla. While official franchise names and ownership details are yet to be announced, Sri Lanka Cricket is expected to reveal the final team identities and branding ahead of the tournament.
The player registration portal opened on May 8 and will close on May 20. Direct signings can occur until May 22, although the registration deadline for all categories remains May 20. To support local talent development, SLC has mandated each squad to include two emerging Under-23 local players, with at least one required in the starting XI. Teams must also field a minimum of four overseas players in every match.
The LPL will maintain a strong focus on player media duties and fan engagement, with match-fee penalties ranging from 5% to 50% imposed on players who do not meet the tournament’s media and promotional obligations.
