Manipur shutdown paralyses life over killing of three Meitei people

TheNewsMill 2 days ago

A 48-hour statewide shutdown called by the Native People's Committee Manipur (NPCM) from midnight on October 19 has severely disrupted normal life across Manipur.

The shutdown demands decisive security action against armed groups responsible for an attack in Khongbal Tangkhul area that resulted in the deaths of three Meitei people and injuries to several others.

The shutdown affected both the hill and valley districts, with protests continuing until the government takes credible steps to address the committee’s demands. Health services, religious activities, and certain essential services were exempted from the shutdown.

Shops, markets, business establishments, banks, private offices, and educational institutions-including schools, colleges, and universities-remained closed. Public and private transport services were suspended except for police and government vehicles. Entertainment venues and other commercial activities were entirely halted, and government offices operated with minimal attendance.

Major roads across both valley and hill districts were deserted, with only essential service vehicles observed in transit. Protesters placed wooden logs in the middle of roads, and women protesters sat along the roads, blocking passage.

Inter-state road transport was suspended, affecting connectivity between Manipur and other parts of India. However, airline services continued to operate normally. Essential services such as medical emergencies, fire services, water supply, media operations, and religious functions were exempt from the shutdown.

The shutdown’s impact was noted to be more significant in valley areas compared to hill districts, while protests remain ongoing in demand for government action.
