Mohsin Khan's exceptional five-wicket haul highlighted a tense IPL 2026 encounter, but Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were narrowly defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a Super Over on Sunday.
Mohsin delivered a crucial spell of 4-1-23-5-the season’s first five-wicket haul-putting LSG in a strong position for much of the match before KKR rallied to force a tie and eventually secured victory. The left-arm pacer made an immediate impact with a wicket maiden and continued to claim regular wickets, including that of Cameron Green, who scored 34 runs off 21 balls. At the end of Mohsin’s spell, KKR were struggling at 73 for 6.
Former West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite praised Mohsin’s disciplined and aggressive bowling on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out Show, stating, “We talked about enjoying fast bowlers being metronomic in length, being disciplined, being boring. He got a little bit of assistance, and when he went short, he really hammered the pitch. Sometimes we can get bowlers just resting the ball on a good length, trying to get a little bit of help, but nah, he bashed away at the length.”
Mohsin’s bowling in the middle overs was also pivotal in preventing KKR’s recovery attempts, as he took two more wickets to maintain pressure on the opposition.
This performance marked a strong return for Mohsin following injury setbacks that hampered his progress after an impressive debut season in 2022. Former India batter and batting coach Sanjay Bangar said, “It’s been a long time, and it’s just a matter of regaining that prime fitness, because he is one player with that particular skillset that we do not really have that much in quantity in terms of the Indian talent. We have plenty of batters, but one thing that we lack is a left-arm variety.”
Bangar added, “I believe if you look at the pack that we have, in terms of the left-arm seamers, he impresses the most because the extra bounce that he gets, the ability to hit that length, and he’s got a heavy ball, that’s what they always say. So he’s got all the makings of a wonderful left-arm seamer, and that is something the selectors should be keenly watching.”
Despite Mohsin’s outstanding bowling, LSG could not seal the victory as KKR maintained their composure to win the match in the Super Over. LSG will next play Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on May 4, with Mohsin’s form a major positive for the team moving forward.
