Mumbai City FC secured a 1-0 victory against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on March 20. Noufal PN's first-half goal, alongside a notable performance by goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa and a disciplined defensive effort, was decisive in the match.
With this win, Mumbai City FC moved to the summit of the standings, remaining unbeaten and leading by one point over Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who dropped to second place with 13 points. Phurba Lachenpa was awarded Player of the Match for a series of crucial saves.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant head coach Sergio Lobera made two changes to his starting lineup, introducing Mehtab Singh and Jason Cummings in midfield. Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC head coach Petr Kratky made one alteration, including Jorge Pereyra Diaz in his side.
The game started at a brisk pace, with Mohun Bagan dominating possession early while Mumbai City threatened on the counterattack. Noufal PN had the first shot in the sixth minute but fired over from range after being set up by captain Lallianzuala Chhangte.
Mohun Bagan continued to control the ball, and Liston Colaco saw an effort blocked by Mumbai City centre-back Nuno Reis in the 19th minute. Mumbai City responded with a quick counterattack three minutes later, with Chhangte one-on-one against goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, who denied the attempt before Mehtab Singh cleared the danger.
The visitors took the lead in the 27th minute from a well-executed team move. A swift switch of play from right to left involving four Mumbai City players found Noufal PN in space, and the winger calmly finished with his right foot into the far corner to make it 1-0.
Mohun Bagan sought an equaliser but were repeatedly denied by Lachenpa. The goalkeeper made a diving save in the 40th minute to keep out Jason Cummings’ header and subsequently stopped attempts from Dimitri Petratos.
At the other end, Mumbai City created chances with efforts from Chhangte, Jorge Ortiz, and Pereyra Diaz, all tested by Kaith, who made consecutive saves to keep his team in contention. Despite the frequent end-to-end action, Mumbai City held a narrow lead into halftime.
The second half maintained a similar pattern, with Mohun Bagan dominating possession and Mumbai City posing a threat on the break. Early in the half, Colaco tested Lachenpa, while Vikram Pratap Singh forced a save from Kaith. Maclaren came close in the 60th minute but shot wide, and moments later Petratos had a goal ruled out for offside after a rebound.
Lachenpa remained resolute, producing a fine save in the 69th minute to deny Mohun Bagan once more. The visitors sustained pressure late in the game, with Sahal Abdul Samad narrowly missing from distance in the 90th minute. Petratos had a late free-kick opportunity from the edge of the box but sent his effort off target.
Despite prolonged pressure and dominant possession, Mohun Bagan could not find a breakthrough as Mumbai City’s organised defence held firm. The final whistle confirmed Mumbai City’s 1-0 win, ending Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s unbeaten streak and propelling Mumbai City to the top of the table ahead of the international break.
