Deepak Chahar, pacer for Mumbai Indians, acknowledged that the team was 10-15 runs short in their IPL match against Delhi Capitals on April 5. The game marked the second match of the season for both teams.
Delhi Capitals secured a six-wicket victory, their second consecutive win in the tournament.
Mumbai Indians batted first, posting a total of 162 for 6 in 20 overs. Delhi Capitals chased the target with 11 balls remaining, largely due to Sameer Rizvi’s innings of 90 runs off 51 balls.
At the post-match press conference, Chahar commented on the pitch conditions, noting that there was some moisture which made the surface slightly slow and made the toss a crucial factor. He stated, “I think the wicket was a little slow. I think the toss was crucial. I think there was a bit of moisture there. I wouldn’t say it was slow, it was just I think I could feel the moisture, and the toss was very crucial in this sense, that’s why we were 10-15 runs short there.”
Mumbai Indians also played without their designated captain Hardik Pandya, who was absent due to illness. When asked if his absence affected the team, Chahar affirmed it, adding that defending 160 runs in an afternoon game was challenging without regular wickets. He observed that Rizvi’s substantial innings made a difference and suggested the match would have been closer had they dismissed him earlier. “Yes, absolutely. I think he was sick, that’s why he couldn’t play. Hopefully, he’ll play in the next game. Yes, we were short because defending 160 in an afternoon game is a bit difficult, and to defend 160 you have to take consistent wickets. Rizvi played really well. If we would’ve got him out early, before 10 overs, the match would have been very interesting till the end,” Chahar said.
Rizvi also delivered a match-winning performance in Delhi Capitals’ first IPL game of the season against Lucknow Super Giants, scoring an unbeaten 70 off 47 balls.
Chahar remarked on Rizvi’s progress, stating, “The potential was always there, and now with experience, he’s become better. What I’ve seen in the IPL is that confidence is the key to success because everyone who’s selected in the IPL has the skill. So, now I think he’s become confident; you can see back-to-back he scored runs, he’s got better and better. It’s learning for everyone that skill doesn’t matter; confidence matters. So, whoever gets a chance, like a lot of youngsters playing in this tournament, they should learn from him to get confident and keep winning matches for their team.”
During the chase of 163, Delhi Capitals lost early wickets but recovered through a 66-run partnership between Pathum Nissanka, who scored 44 runs, and Rizvi. Rizvi then took control, scoring 90 runs off 51 balls, and formed a winning partnership with David Miller, who completed the chase.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians’ innings featured Suryakumar Yadav top-scoring with 51 runs and Rohit Sharma contributing 35 runs. Mukesh Kumar was the standout bowler for Delhi Capitals, taking two critical wickets of Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma.
Sameer Rizvi was awarded Player of the Match for his influential innings, continuing his strong form this IPL season.
