Mumbai Indians (MI) won the toss and chose to bat first against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.
After winning the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya described the pitch as good and expressed the team’s intention to give their batters another opportunity to score runs following their previous innings of 243-5. Despite that strong total, MI lost their last match to Sunrisers Hyderabad. He added, “Looks like a good track. The way we batted in the last game, we want to give another opportunity to our batters to score runs. We have to play our best cricket and see what happens. The mood has been good, it’s been challenging. We have to fight. It’s about playing for pride as well.”
Both MI and CSK have underperformed relative to their reputations as five-time IPL champions. Chennai Super Kings secured only three victories in their first eight matches, relying on a determined performance by Ruturaj Gaikwad to stay competitive. They currently occupy seventh place on the IPL 2026 points table.
The Mumbai Indians' form has been even weaker, with six losses in eight games leaving them ninth on the table. Led by Hardik Pandya, MI still hold a slim chance to recover and qualify for the playoffs, aiming to mount a comeback.
