Mumbai's CSMT handles over 1.2 million passengers while preserving heritage

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, serves over 1.2 million passengers daily, representing more than a transit hub-it embodies the city's history and culture.

At dawn, the station's grand Victorian Gothic architecture begins its daily transition from a quiet landmark to a bustling centre of movement. Its detailed carvings, arches, stained glass windows, and imposing dome reflect stories from a bygone era.

Dr. Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, stated, “Even today, over 1.2 million passengers travel through this station daily, whether by suburban services or long-distance trains. It is not just vital for Mumbai, but for the entire state of Maharashtra.”

Despite the station's heavy use, CSMT maintains its historical identity. Dr. Nila added, “This building reflects our history and heritage. It has become an identity in itself. Whenever Mumbai is portrayed-especially in films-the iconic facade of CSMT is often used to represent the city.”

Modern upgrades such as advanced digital signalling and continuous maintenance allow the station to function efficiently while preserving its old-world charm.

Visitors often regard CSMT as a destination beyond its transport role. Tourist Aditi remarked, “We came to explore nearby attractions, but the moment we saw CSMT, it felt like the destination itself. Its architecture has such a distinct old-world charm that it draws you in instantly. It’s the kind of place people would travel miles just to see.” Another visitor, Abhishek, said, “The architecture is strikingly beautiful. Considering it was built during the British era, the level of maintenance is remarkable. It is truly a matter of pride for Mumbai.”

CSMT was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, recognising both its architectural significance and its role as a “living heritage.” Unlike static monuments, the station continues to evolve as a vital part of daily life.

More than a railway station, CSMT is a place where the past coexists with the present, shaping Mumbai’s future.
