The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are actively engaged in rescuing a three-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Jhalaria village, Badnagar tehsil, approximately 60 kilometres from Ujjain, on Thursday night.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma stated that the NDRF and SDRF have been using the borewell to lower camera lines, oxygen lines, and other equipment during the rescue effort. “The efforts have been going on since the entire night. The NDRF and the SDRF are using a bore to put their equipment, camera lines, and oxygen lines down. The construction agencies have dug an 80 feet x 20 feet tunnel, but now there is hard rock beneath. If we break it will cause vibrations. The rescue operation is underway,” he said.

Badnagar MLA Jitendra Pandya, present at the site, confirmed the continuous efforts of the administration, adding, “The administration is continuously trying to rescue him. The NDRF, SDRF teams and a team of doctors are deployed here.”

The child, Bhagirath, son of shepherd Praveen Devasi, fell into the borewell at around 8 pm. His mother, working nearby, witnessed the fall. Others rushed to the location after hearing her cries and alerted residents, who informed authorities.

SP Sharma explained that the borewell’s lid, initially covered by a stone, was dislodged by a sheep. Subsequently, the child opened the lid and fell in while looking into the borewell.

The rescue operation involves half a dozen Pocklain and JCB machines, with the SDRF digging a parallel pit beside the borewell. About 35 feet of this parallel digging has been completed so far. A camera monitors the child, although the image is unclear due to the depth. Oxygen is being supplied through a pipe to ensure the child’s breathing.

The rescue operation is proceeding on a war footing.
