Petroleum Ministry directs doubling supply of 5kg LPG cylinders for migrant labourers

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has instructed state governments and union territories to double the daily supply of 5kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders allocated for migrant labourers.

This decision follows an assessment of the average daily supply during March 2-3, 2026, which exceeded the 20% limit established in a previous communication dated March 21, 2026.

In a letter addressed to all Chief Secretaries, Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Ministry, specified that these cylinders are to be distributed exclusively to migrant labourers in each state with the support of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The initiative aims to enhance access to cooking fuel for migrant workers during times of increased demand.

Mittal added that the State Governments and their Food/Civil Supplies Departments will supervise the distribution process to ensure the additional cylinders reach the intended recipients efficiently.

Regarding the ongoing West Asia crisis, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, stated there is no LPG shortage in India and no "dryout" has been observed at petrol pumps nationwide. She reported that 6,500 tonnes of commercial LPG were sold the previous day to meet demand.

Speaking at the Inter-Ministerial briefing on recent developments in West Asia, Sharma confirmed the normal operation of all petrol pumps across the country. She also highlighted that oil marketing companies have conducted 1,300 awareness camps to inform consumers about the availability of 5kg cylinders. During these camps, 10,005 cylinders were sold.

Sharma said, "No dryout has been reported in LPG distributorships, all the petrol pumps are operating normally. No dryout has been reported in the petrol pumps also. 6,500 tonnes of commercial LPG sold yesterday. 1,300 awareness camps have been organised by the oil marketing companies for the past four days. Companies have sold 10,005 cylinders. The awareness camps aim to provide information on the availability of 5kg cylinders to consumers."

Earlier, a high-level review meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas with State officials emphasised measures to ensure adequate LPG supply nationwide. States were instructed to prioritise LPG distribution for domestic and essential needs while maintaining strict vigilance against hoarding, diversion, and misinformation.

In response to concerns about Free Trade LPG supplies to migrant workers, States confirmed that there is no disruption affecting migrants and that supplies remain stable. The Secretary advised that States may consider targeted distribution of 5kg FTL LPG cylinders based on local needs, coordinating with OMCs.

The Ministry reports that LPG supply across the country remains firmly controlled, with indicators pointing to stable and improving distribution. Since March 23, 2026, approximately 675,000 5kg Free Trade LPG cylinders have been sold nationwide.

Public sector unit OMCs have organised roughly 550 awareness camps for 5kg FTL cylinders across states, resulting in the sale of more than 6,700 cylinders. No dry-outs have been reported at any LPG distributorship.

Online LPG bookings have increased to around 97% industry-wide. Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)-based deliveries have risen to about 90%, a measure designed to prevent cylinder diversion.

Deliveries of domestic LPG cylinders remain normal, with over 18 crore cylinders delivered to households since March 1, 2026. Officials maintain that the supply situation is under control and urge the public to disregard rumours or misinformation regarding LPG shortages.
