Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed 'immense delight' on January 31, 2026, following the inauguration of the 'Sacred Exposition of the Holy Relics of the Tathagata' in Leh, commemorating a major spiritual milestone for the region on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

The exposition features ancient relics connected to the Piprahwa Stupa in Kapilavastu and is anticipated to attract thousands of devotees and tourists to the high-altitude union territory.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister emphasised the historical and spiritual importance of the relics associated with the Piprahwa Stupa in Kapilavastu. “It is a matter of immense delight that yesterday, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, the ‘Sacred Exposition of the Holy Relics of the Tathagata’ was inaugurated in Leh. These revered relics are linked to the Piprahwa Stupa in Kapilavastu and were excavated in the closing years of the nineteenth century. They embody the enduring teachings of Lord Buddha,” he said.

The relics carry significant historical and spiritual value, providing a tangible connection to the life and legacy of Lord Buddha. They were unearthed during archaeological excavations in the late 19th century in the ancient city of Kapilavastu.

The Prime Minister described the sacred remains as representing the “enduring teachings” of peace, compassion, and mindfulness preached by the Buddha.

The exposition has been organised as a travelling pilgrimage to enable remote communities of Ladakh to offer their prayers. Currently stationed in Leh, the exhibition will remain open to the public until May 14, 2026, before travelling to the Zanskar region.

“The exposition will continue until 14th May. In the coming days, it will also travel to Zanskar. It offers a valuable opportunity for people from across Ladakh to pay their respects,” Mr Modi said.

He also highlighted the wider benefits of the event for Ladakh’s economy and identity. “It offers a valuable opportunity for people from across Ladakh to pay their respects. It will also boost spiritual and cultural tourism in Ladakh,” he added.

The event underscored the government’s commitment to preserving Buddhist heritage while promoting Ladakh as an important destination for global spiritual tourism.
