The case was initiated following the girl’s statement during counselling, in which she alleged she was subjected to inappropriate behaviour and sexual abuse by her father during her childhood. After the mother became aware of the situation, the girl and her elder sister were sent to live at a relative’s residence.

While staying at the relative's home, the girl further claimed that a priest also sexually assaulted her. Based on these allegations, police registered cases against the accused under Sections 75(2) and 65(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 4, 8, and 10 of the POCSO Act. The investigation is ongoing.

Separately, in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, a Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) sentenced a man to three years of rigorous imprisonment under the POCSO Act and two years under Section 333 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on August 5, according to the Himachal Pradesh Police.

As stated in a press note from the Office of the Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh, Ajay Kumar, a resident of Barota village, was convicted on July 30 by Additional District and Sessions Judge, Fast Track Special Court (POCSO), Dharamshala.

The court ordered Kumar to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for the offence under Section 8 of the POCSO Act, with an additional one month of simple imprisonment if the fine remains unpaid. For the offence under Section 333 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 5,000 fine, subject to the same default imprisonment provision.
