President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes to the former President of India, Giani Zail Singh, on Tuesday at Rashtrapati Bhavan, commemorating his birth anniversary.
Giani Zail Singh served as the seventh President of India from July 25, 1982, to July 25, 1987. Born on May 5, 1916, in Sandhwan, Faridkot district of Punjab, he made significant political contributions throughout his career and demonstrated a strong dedication to public service.
He was actively involved in the Indian freedom movement, including participation in the Quit India Movement of 1942, during which he was imprisoned multiple times for his involvement in protests against British colonial rule.
Following India's independence, Zail Singh held several key political roles in Punjab, serving as a Minister and subsequently as Chief Minister of the state from 1972 to 1977. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he implemented important initiatives such as land reforms and administrative restructuring.
In 1980, he was appointed Union Home Minister in Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's cabinet, where he managed challenging issues related to law and order and internal security.
His election as President of India in 1982 marked the peak of his career. His presidency was noted for his commitment to constitutional propriety and the values of justice, liberty, and equality enshrined in the Constitution.
Zail Singh was also recognised for his humility and dedication to the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged, reflecting his strong belief in equality and social justice.
He passed away on December 25, 1994. His contributions to Indian politics and public service continue to be remembered and inspire many.
