She expressed confidence that the athletes would bring glory to the nation through their talent, determination and perseverance.

In a post on X, the President stated, “My best wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the XXIII Commonwealth Games 2026 being held at Glasgow, Scotland. I am confident that, with your talent, determination and perseverance, you will bring glory to the nation.”

She added, “The entire nation stands with you as you strive for excellence. I wish you every success.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent, expressing confidence that the athletes would compete with passion, determination and a spirit of excellence while inspiring millions across the country.

In an X post, PM Modi wrote, “As the Commonwealth #Glasgow2026 Games begin, my best wishes to the Indian contingent. I am confident that our athletes will participate in the Games with passion, determination and a spirit of excellence. The skills and dedication of our athletes always inspire countless Indians.”

The Commonwealth Games 2026 are taking place from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow. India is fielding a team of more than 120 athletes across eight able-bodied sports and five para sports, aiming to build on its legacy at the multi-sport event.

Mirabai Chanu led the Indian contingent as the flag-bearer during the opening ceremony at Glasgow’s Hydro Stadium.

India made a strong start to its campaign, with Commonwealth champions Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki securing a victory over Malta in the women’s fours bowls, while Putul Sonowal defeated world champion Ryan Bester in the men’s singles.

The Indian duo dominated the opening set 7-1, but Malta recovered to win the second set and force a tie-break. Pinki's final bowl proved decisive as India sealed the victory.

In the men’s singles Section D opener, Sonowal won the first set 5-4 before Bester took the second 7-3.

The Section D group features six players, with the winners of each of the four sections advancing to the semi-finals.

Putul Sonowal will next face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands in his second Section D match, while Pinki and Rupa will compete against South Africa in their upcoming women’s pairs fixture. Both matches are scheduled for Friday.

At Glasgow 2026, bowls has commenced with sectional group play, in which players and teams compete in a round-robin format to qualify for the knockout stages.
