Punjab farmers begin wheat harvesting with Vaisakhi celebrations

Farmers in Kallair Balla village, Punjab, marked Vaisakhi on April 14 by harvesting wheat using traditional sickles amid drum beats and celebrations.

Before starting the harvest, the farmers performed Ardas to express gratitude to God for a good Rabi crop yield, particularly wheat. Vaisakhi also signifies the Punjabi New Year and is a symbol of prosperity linked to the harvest.

Ranjit Singh, a local farmer, described Vaisakhi as a festival of great cultural and religious importance for Punjab, recalling the historical establishment of the Khalsa Panth and the tradition of Amrit Sanchar by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He noted that the timing coincides with the ripening of the wheat crop, marking the beginning of the harvest season in the state.

Despite modern machinery like combine harvesters being available, many farmers still start harvesting manually as part of longstanding tradition. Singh emphasised the role of farming in Punjab, which provides employment to both farmers and labourers, and highlighted how Punjab’s farmers contributed to India’s self-sufficiency in food production.

He recalled the period when India imported wheat under the PL-480 Act from the United States, but said Punjab’s farmers helped fill national granaries and continue to underpin the country’s food security despite ongoing challenges.

Farmers Kawardeep Singh and Daljit Singh also shared their views. Kawardeep Singh stated that happiness is spreading across the entire state as people celebrate Vaisakhi, a day of great historical and cultural significance.

Daljit Singh explained that the wheat crop is ripe and the cutting process began today following prayers. He described the harvest as a valuable achievement representing six months of dedication and patience, bringing pride and joy to the farmers.

Kawardeep Singh further said the occasion is special because it represents the reward of months of nurturing crops, facing weather challenges, and the beginning of income and stability for farming families. The harvesting season officially starts on Vaisakhi across Punjab, accompanied by prayers seeking blessings for a successful season.

The festive atmosphere includes dhol beats and enthusiastic celebrations as farmers commence the harvest. Kawardeep Singh likened the harvest to a business reaching its final returns stage, with the “golden crop” providing for present needs and facilitating preparations for future planting.
