The influence of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) was evident at the Senior Open Ranking wrestling tournament held in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, from May 10 to 12, as numerous athletes who competed in the league's fifth season achieved notable success.
Medal winners in the competition earned eligibility for selection trials for the forthcoming World Championships and Commonwealth Championships, highlighting the league’s growing role in India’s high-performance wrestling framework, according to a press release.
Several wrestlers from PWL Season 5 reached the podium with convincing performances, demonstrating the benefits of regular elite competition against leading domestic and international opponents provided by the league. Following their international achievements, PWL athletes have once again confirmed the depth of talent fostered by the league through their domestic performances.
In the men’s freestyle categories, Sagar of the UP Dominators won gold in the 57kg division, while Yash Tushir, a Maharashtra Kesari wrestler, secured the 74kg gold with a series of dominant displays throughout the tournament.
Tushir’s victory marked a significant return; the former World Junior bronze medallist, whose last international event was the Asian Championships two years prior, overcame a challenging period involving knee, shoulder, and toe injuries followed by six months of rehabilitation. In Gonda, he convincingly defeated five opponents to claim the gold medal and strengthen his contention for upcoming global events.
Naveen from Tigers of Mumbai Dangals won gold in the 79kg category, and Deepak Punia, representing Maharashtra Kesari in PWL Season 5, added another gold medal to his record by winning the 92kg division.
In the women’s competition, Anjali of Delhi Dangal Warriors secured silver in the 62kg category, enhancing her prospects ahead of the national team selection.
Akhil Gupta, CEO and Promoter of PWL, stated: “The performances once again highlighted the growing influence of PWL as a platform that enables Indian wrestlers to consistently perform under pressure at the highest level. By bringing together Olympians, international stars, established Indian wrestlers and emerging prospects under one competitive structure, the league has continued to play a major role in the development of wrestling in the country.”
The league’s return earlier this year had already shown positive effects internationally, with several Indian and foreign wrestlers from Season 5 delivering strong performances in subsequent major global competitions.
Held at the Noida Indoor Stadium in January, PWL Season 5 reaffirmed its position as India’s premier Olympic-style wrestling competition. The league featured six franchises-Tigers of Mumbai Dangal, Haryana Thunders, Maharashtra Kesari, UP Dominators, Punjab Royals, and Delhi Dangal Warriors-bringing together top domestic and international wrestlers, with Haryana Thunders ultimately winning the championship.
With support from national wrestling bodies, the Pro Wrestling League remains central to strengthening India’s wrestling ecosystem. PWL wrestlers accounted for 11 of India’s 17 medals at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships, underscoring its significance as a pathway for Indian wrestlers to achieve success at continental and global levels.
