Residents of Delhi experienced rainfall across various areas on Monday, providing relief from the intense summer heat. This recent rain follows similar showers that occurred on Saturday, reflecting a shift in weather patterns in the national capital over recent days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest monthly forecast issued on Friday, predicted above-normal rainfall for India in May 2026, despite varied temperature trends across different regions. The IMD stated, “During May 2026, maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to below normal across many parts of the country.”

However, the forecast also highlighted that “above-normal temperatures are likely in many parts of southern peninsular India, some parts of the northeast, and northwest India.” Minimum temperatures are anticipated to remain above normal over large parts of the country, with some regions in northwest, central, and adjoining peninsular India potentially experiencing normal to below-normal night temperatures.

Regarding heatwave conditions, the IMD warned, “above-normal heatwave days are likely over some parts of the foothills of the Himalayas, east coast states, Gujarat, and Maharashtra,” indicating ongoing risks of extreme heat in select areas.

Rainfall across the nation is expected to surpass average levels. The IMD remarked, “The rainfall during May 2026, averaged over the country as a whole, is most likely to be above normal (>110% of LPA),” referring to the long-period average. Yet, it cautioned that certain parts of east, northeast, and east-central India could receive below-normal rainfall.

The IMD also noted changes in broader climate indicators, stating, “ENSO-neutral conditions are evolving towards El Nino conditions over the equatorial Pacific,” with models suggesting El Nino development during the upcoming southwest monsoon season. It added that although neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions currently prevail, “positive IOD conditions are likely to develop towards the end of the monsoon season.”
