Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has announced the forthcoming installment of his political crime series, 'Sarkar 4', with shooting planned to commence next month.

The announcement was made during the opening day of the Red Lorry Film Festival.

Responding to a question, Varma stated, “I am making Sarkar 4. I’m starting that next month.” He also discussed his other project, ‘The Syndicate’, joking that it would “wash away all my sins.”

The original ‘Sarkar’ film was released in 2005, starring Amitabh Bachchan as Subhash Nagre and Abhishek Bachchan as his on-screen son, Shankar. Its sequel, ‘Sarkar Raj’, followed in 2008, introducing Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Anita Rajan. The latest film in the series, ‘Sarkar 3’, came out in 2017 and featured returning cast members Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, alongside Yami Gautam, Manoj Bajpayee, and Amit Sadh.

At the festival, Varma was present for a special screening of his cult classic ‘Shiva’. He reflected on the film’s inspirations, noting the influence of Steven Spielberg on his visual style. “Certainly, some of the shots in Shiva were inspired by Spielberg’s style of shot-taking,” he said. Varma also cited thematic inspiration from ‘The Way of the Dragon’, starring Bruce Lee, explaining that he adapted the core premise into an entirely different context.

Varma expressed admiration for Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’ and described Dhar as one of the most promising talents of the current generation, while reaffirming that Steven Spielberg remains his all-time favourite filmmaker.
