The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have achieved consecutive Indian Premier League (IPL) title victories, drawing praise from IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, who stated that the franchise has 'just started' and described star batter Virat Kohli as 'a trophy himself'.
RCB’s recent triumph marks their fourth Indian franchise cricket title, including two Women’s Premier League (WPL) championships, and this year, they accomplished the rare feat of winning both IPL and WPL titles.
Speaking to the media, Dhumal said, “I think they have (RCB) just started. That’s what they said last year, that it’s gonna be back-to-back, and they did it. The way they played throughout the season was phenomenal. Gujarat Titans played amazingly well as a team. They had an amazing bowling side, but it was not their day.” On Kohli, he added, “Virat does not need any trophies. He is a trophy himself.”
Kohli concluded the season with 675 runs in 16 innings at an average of 56.25 and a career-best strike rate of 165.84, including one century and five fifties, with a highest score of 105 not out. He finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
Commenting on Rajasthan Royals’ 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhumal said, “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has an amazing talent. I wish him all the very best. I hope he continues doing good things for his country.”
Looking ahead, Dhumal noted that the next IPL season will mark the tournament’s 20th anniversary, describing it as “going to be special”.
In the final match, Gujarat Titans scored 155 for 8 in their 20 overs after being put to bat first by RCB. Washington Sundar (50 not out from 37 balls with five fours) and Nishant Sindhu (20 from 18 balls with three fours) were the only players to exceed 20 runs. Rasikh Dar Salam (3 for 27), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2 for 29), and Josh Hazlewood (2 for 37) regularly took wickets.
RCB began their innings strongly with a 62-run partnership between Venkatesh Iyer (32 from 16 balls with four boundaries and two sixes) and Virat Kohli. Despite Gujarat Titans reducing RCB to 132 for 5, Kohli remained unbeaten on 75 off 42 balls, striking nine fours and three sixes, to guide RCB to victory with two overs remaining.
