RCB to wear green jerseys for IPL match against Delhi Capitals to promote sustainability

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will wear their iconic green jerseys to promote their 'Green Initiative' during their home match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The jerseys, made from recycled materials, symbolise the franchise’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. According to a statement from RCB, they remain the only carbon-neutral T20 franchise globally.

Since launching the initiative in 2011, RCB has embedded sustainability into its operations, emphasising measurement, accountability, and encouraging fan involvement as it works towards achieving carbon-positive status. Rajesh Menon, CEO of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, stated, “Achieving carbon-neutral status as a T20 franchise is the result of years of dedicated work. The green jerseys reflect this commitment, and we hope this initiative inspires our fans and stakeholders to embrace more responsible and sustainable practices.”

A significant part of RCB’s sustainability strategy involves analysing fan behaviour on matchdays through surveys across all stands at the stadium. This study examines commute patterns, ride-sharing habits, and estimates carbon emissions per spectator to better understand the environmental impact associated with fan travel.

Fans are encouraged to use public transport to attend matches, with match tickets granting access to the Bengaluru Metro. At the stadium, RCB strengthens waste management systems by conducting detailed monitoring and audits of segregation practices.

The franchise implements multiple measures to reduce and offset carbon emissions, including waste segregation and management at the stadium, using renewable energy sources such as solar-powered lighting, and initiatives like voluntary fan pledges to reduce reliance on conventional resources.

RCB also conducts detailed assessments of its operational carbon footprint, covering emissions from team travel, accommodation, and energy consumption. This includes analysing travel distances and fuel use, accommodation emissions through room-night data, and verifying stadium energy usage via diesel generator audits and electricity records.

Matchday sustainability audits will be carried out throughout the season to enhance on-ground accountability. These efforts will culminate in a comprehensive sustainability report, subject to an independent assurance process.
