Rohit Sharma doubtful for Afghanistan ODIs amid fitness concerns

Rohit Sharma doubtful for Afghanistan ODIs amid fitness concerns

TheNewsMill 1 day ago

Indian batter and former captain Rohit Sharma is uncertain to participate in the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, according to sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Despite being included in the squad, his selection depends on his fitness following a hamstring injury that affected his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In this year’s IPL, Rohit has played nine matches, scoring 283 runs at an average of 35.37 and a strike rate of 1576.22, including two half-centuries and a highest score of 84. At 39 years old, Rohit is now exclusively an ODI player, having retired from T20 internationals after leading India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024, and from Test cricket in May last year ahead of the ICC World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27.

Rohit’s most recent captaincy assignment in ODIs was the ICC Champions Trophy victory in March 2025, where he secured the title with a match-winning 76 against New Zealand in the final. In 2025, he was India’s second-highest run-scorer with 650 runs from 14 innings, averaging 50.00 with a strike rate of 100.46 and a top score of 121 not out. However, earlier this year against New Zealand, he managed only 61 runs across three innings, with a best score of 25.

In addition to Rohit’s uncertain availability, Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury, also reported by BCCI sources. Kohli reportedly experienced difficulty running during the final stages of the IPL final between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad but contributed significantly with a 42-ball 75 not out in a 156-run chase.

The ODI series against Afghanistan will feature three matches starting on June 13, following a one-off Test match between the two sides at New Chandigarh.

Virat Kohli concluded the IPL as the team’s highest run-scorer, accumulating 675 runs in 16 innings at an average of 56.25 and a strike rate of 165.84, including one century and five half-centuries, with a top score of 105 not out. The 37-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest ODI batters in history, ranking second for the most runs in the format with 14,797 runs in 299 innings, an average of 58.71, 54 centuries (the highest by any batter), and 77 fifties, with a best score of 183.

Kohli now focuses solely on ODIs, having retired from T20 internationals after the 2024 T20 World Cup victory and from Tests last May before the commencement of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Since making this transition last year, Kohli has scored 891 runs in 16 matches at an average of 68.53 and a strike rate of 98.45, with four centuries and five fifties, his highest score being 135.

Furthermore, during India’s ICC Champions Trophy triumph last year, Kohli played a pivotal role. Since the start of his ODI-exclusive career on last year’s Australia tour, he has accumulated 616 runs in nine matches at an average of 88 and a strike rate of 106.39, including three centuries and three fifties. In his most recent ODI series earlier this year against New Zealand, Kohli was India’s top scorer with 240 runs across three matches at an average of 80.00, which included a century and a fifty.
