SA20 Season 4 generated a record USD 406 million in GDP for South Africa and created or sustained nearly 9,500 jobs nationwide, according to an independently assessed report on the tournament's economic impact.
The final Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) highlighted the league’s strongest financial performance to date, with rises in direct expenditure, GDP contribution, employment, and household income.
Season 4 saw a 13 per cent increase in attendances, with 22 of the 34 matches sold out across the six host cities. The final match sold out in record time for the fourth consecutive season, cementing SA20 as a major event of the South African summer.
Direct expenditure increased to USD 137 million, up from USD 112 million in Season 3. This translated to a 23 per cent year-on-year growth in GDP contribution. Employment also rose, with 9,470 annualised jobs created or sustained, a 16 per cent increase compared to the previous season, while household income grew from USD 87 million to USD 106 million.
League Commissioner Graeme Smith stated: “The independently assessed results demonstrate how the League’s growth is increasingly translating into wider economic value. Four seasons in, we can see the impact of Betway SA20 extending well beyond what happens on the field. A USD 406 million contribution to GDP, almost 9,500 jobs supported and USD 106 million in household income are significant numbers and demonstrate the broader value that a successful South African sporting property can create.”
He added: “As we head into our fifth season, our ambition is not only to continue growing the League, but to deepen that impact across cricket, our host cities and the wider South African economy.”
The report also noted the economic activity generated across SA20’s six host cities and the influence of its six Indian Premier League-backed franchises in driving investment, attendance, and engagement locally.
Smith further commented: “What is particularly encouraging is that this impact is being generated across the country. Our six franchises and host cities have been fundamental to the League’s growth from day one. Every full stadium brings people into these cities, supports local businesses and creates opportunities around the event. As the League grows, we want that contribution to grow with it.”
Season 4 also expanded SA20’s social impact efforts, raising USD 31,200 for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and offering more than 400 young Laureus beneficiaries the chance to experience live cricket.
The Season 4 results establish a strong foundation as SA20 prepares for its fifth season, starting on January 17, 2027. The build-up will continue with the Season 5 Player Auction on October 7, ahead of another summer featuring some of the world’s leading T20 players.
