Sandeep Pathak criticises Punjab Police FIRs after joining BJP

Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Sandeep Pathak has condemned the filing of two First Information Reports (FIRs) against him by the Punjab Police, describing the action as a misuse of government resources.

The FIRs were registered shortly after Pathak, formerly a prominent strategist for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with six other Rajya Sabha members.

Addressing the media on Sunday, Pathak stated that he had not been formally informed about the FIRs despite extensive media reporting of non-bailable charges. “Since yesterday, television channels have been reporting that two FIRs have been filed against me in Punjab. I have yet to receive any formal or informal information about these FIRs,” he said. “It’s possible that if an FIR has been filed after misusing government machinery, I’ll be able to fully respond only after seeing it.”

Although the exact charges have not been publicly disclosed, reports indicate they include non-bailable sections related to corruption and harassment, accusations dismissed by the BJP as a “planned conspiracy.”

Regarding his shift from AAP to BJP, Pathak maintained that his decision was driven by ideological differences rather than personal motives. He asserted his ongoing commitment to “principles and righteousness,” regardless of party affiliation. “Everyone who knows me, everyone who has worked with me, whether volunteers or leaders, knows well that I am a person who follows principles and righteousness. As long as I worked in the Aam Aadmi Party, I worked according to principles and righteousness. Today, I am in the Bharatiya Janata Party. I will continue to work according to principles and righteousness,” he said.

Pathak emphasised, “Success or failure in politics does not matter to me. I have to ensure that, even if I fail, I never break my political dharma. I didn’t leave the Aam Aadmi Party for any personal reasons. I did this because of long-standing differences in ideology and work style.”

The FIRs were filed on Saturday in two different districts of Punjab, shortly after Pathak and six other MPs joined the BJP, strengthening the ruling party’s position in the Upper House of Parliament.

Meanwhile, the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have questioned the timing of the FIRs, labelling the move as “political vendetta” directed against Pathak.
