In an unrelated case, a police team conducted surveillance based on a tip-off received by Thoothukudi Q Branch Inspector Vijay Anitha, indicating smuggled goods were being transported illegally to Sri Lanka from the Thirespuram area under the North Police Station’s jurisdiction.
Following the intelligence, Sub-Inspector Ramachandran, Special Sub-Inspector Ramar, Head Constables Irudaya Rajkumar and Isakkimuthu, and Constables Palani, Balamurugan, and Gabriel conducted a night patrol on May 12. At approximately 9:15 pm near the northern side of the Thirespuram fishing harbour, police observed goods being loaded onto an unregistered fibre boat equipped with two engines, allegedly for smuggling.
Police seized five cartons containing 1,200 pieces of Nature Power Papaya Soap and the fibre boat. The suspects fled upon sighting the police. Police sources estimate the value of the seized items at around Rs 5 lakh.
