Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva has resigned with immediate effect, the board confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday.

The statement also announced that all office bearers and members of the Executive Committee have stepped down alongside Silva.

“The President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Shammi Silva, has tendered his resignation from the post, effective today. Along with him, the office bearers and members of the Executive Committee of the SLC have also submitted their resignations,” the statement said.

The resignations have been formally communicated to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage. “This decision has been formally communicated to His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage,” the SLC media release added.

The move represents a significant administrative shake-up within Sri Lanka Cricket, although no reasons for the collective resignations have been officially disclosed.

Shammi Silva first assumed the SLC presidency in February 2019, succeeding Thilanga Sumathipala, who had previously faced corruption allegations. Initially regarded as an ally of Sumathipala, Silva consolidated his position over time, serving four consecutive terms, with three elections uncontested.

During Silva’s seven years in charge, the men’s and women’s teams won Asia Cup titles; however, consistent success proved elusive. The men’s team experienced a notable decline in rankings, with disappointing finishes at the 2023 ODI World Cup (ninth place) and the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups-the latter co-hosted by Sri Lanka. The recent appointment of Gary Kirsten as men’s head coach has not quelled calls for leadership changes.
