Sunny Deol honoured legendary singer Asha Bhosle following her death on Sunday at the age of 92. She passed away at Breach Candy Hospital, where she had been admitted on Saturday evening due to extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.
Dr Pratit Samdani confirmed the cause of death, stating, “Asha Bhosale breathed her last today in Breach Candy Hospital. She passed away due to multi-organ failure.”
Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news and provided details of the final rites: “My mother passed away today. People can pay their last respects to her at 11 am tomorrow at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, where she lived. Her last rites will be performed at 4 pm tomorrow at Shivaji Park.”
Asha Bhosle provided vocals for numerous songs in films starring Sunny Deol throughout his career. Their collaborations appeared in a range of romantic and masala films, including Sohni Mahiwal, Sultanat, Paap Ki Duniya, and Yodha.
Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle began her musical career at a young age and rose to fame during the 1950s. Her career spanned decades during which she recorded thousands of songs across various Indian languages, covering genres such as classical, ghazals, cabaret, pop, and folk. She worked with leading composers and filmmakers, becoming one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema.
Her accolades included the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. In 2011, she was recognised by Guinness World Records as the most-recorded artist in music history.
News of her death has caused widespread grief across India, with fans, artists, and public figures offering condolences and reflecting on her contributions to Indian music.
Asha Bhosle’s versatility is evident in some of her most memorable songs, such as Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Mera Kuchh Saaman, and Chura Liya Hai Tumne.
According to the family announcement, the singer’s mortal remains will be available for public homage at 11 am tomorrow at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, her residence, before the final rites at 4 pm at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.
Born into a prominent musical family, Asha Bhosle was the daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and theatre actor, and the sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. After her father’s early death, she began singing to support her family. She later married Ganpatrao Bhosle and subsequently composer RD Burman. Her passing signifies the close of an era in Indian music history.
