Vaibhav Suryavanshi of Rajasthan Royals set a new record on April 7 by becoming the highest run-scorer in major T20 leagues before the age of 18. In a rain-shortened 11-over match against Mumbai Indians, Suryavanshi delivered a powerful 39 runs off 14 balls, including one four and five sixes, before being dismissed by Shardul Thakur.
His strike rate for the innings was an impressive 278.57.
According to CricViz, Suryavanshi has accumulated 374 runs across major T20 leagues before turning 18, with an average of 37.40 and a strike rate of 218.41 from 10 innings. His record includes a century, two fifties, and 35 sixes. Notably, Suryavanshi hits a six every 4.9 balls faced in the IPL, the best ratio among players with at least 20 balls faced. This outpaces prominent players like Romario Shepherd, Urvil Patel, Jake Fraser McGurk, and Andre Russell.
Suryavanshi notably troubled Mumbai paceman Jasprit Bumrah, who conceded 32 runs in three overs. Suryavanshi struck two sixes off Bumrah, beginning his innings with the first ball faced against the Indian bowler resulting in a six over wide long-on. This season, Suryavanshi has scored 122 runs in three innings, averaging 40.66 with a strike rate near 249, including a 17-ball fifty against Chennai Super Kings.
Partnering Suryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 77 off 32 balls, hitting 10 fours and four sixes. Jaiswal became the fourth Rajasthan Royals batter to hit 100 or more sixes in the IPL, joining Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, and Shane Watson. With 19 fifty-plus scores for the Royals, including two centuries and 17 fifties, Jaiswal is tied with Ajinkya Rahane for second-most such innings. Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson hold the top two positions for fifty-plus scores with 25 each.
Jaiswal has an impressive record against Mumbai Indians, scoring 373 runs from nine innings at an average of 53.28 and a strike rate of 187.43, which includes a century and two half-centuries. His recent scores against MI are 77*, 13, 104*, 10, and 124*.
In this match, Mumbai Indians elected to bowl first in the rain-truncated contest. Alongside the contributions from Suryavanshi and Jaiswal, Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag added 20 runs from 10 balls, enabling Rajasthan Royals to post a total of 150 for three wickets in 11 overs. AM Ghazanfar was the most successful bowler for Mumbai Indians, taking two wickets for 21 runs. Jasprit Bumrah had an uncharacteristically ineffective spell.
