Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee criticised his party colleague Kakoli Ghosh on Thursday over her allegations that he verbally abused her inside the Lok Sabha.
Speaking at a press conference, Banerjee questioned why Ghosh had delayed making the complaint and suggested an ulterior motive.
He emphasised that any such incident must be reported to the Lok Sabha Speaker immediately, stating, “After something happens on the floor, the Speaker must be informed immediately, that is the rule. Any incident must be reported to the Speaker without delay.” He added, “As for the allegations being made, the question is who said what and when. The problem lies in their intentions. It seems they are acting with a motive, which raises my doubts.”
The controversy arose after TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday, requesting permission to lodge a formal complaint against Banerjee for repeatedly verbally abusing her inside the House.
In her letter, Dastidar sought intervention and action against Banerjee, accusing him of behaviour reflecting misogyny affecting not only her but other women MPs as well. She wrote, “I seek your permission to lodge a formal complaint to you for redressal against Lok Sabha Member of AITC Kalyan Banerjee, who has repeatedly verbally abused me inside the Lok Sabha.”
Raising concerns about the treatment of women parliamentarians, she stated, “This misogyny has been against many lady members and needs to be punished.”
Meanwhile, Dastidar resigned as president of the All India Trinamool Mahila Congress, citing alleged “misogynistic behaviour” within the party and other issues that troubled her conscience. In her resignation letter, she announced stepping down as chairperson of the Mahila Congress along with all other organisational posts, committees, and responsibilities within the party.
