TN minister vows action over bribery allegations at Tiruchendur temple

TheNewsMill 2 days ago

Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Minister Ramesh has stated that appropriate action will be taken against anyone found responsible for irregularities at the Tiruchendur Subramaniya Swamy Temple following allegations of bribery involving temple priests.

The minister conducted a surprise inspection at the temple in Thoothukudi district on May 29, starting at 6 am. Allegations suggest that some priests, allegedly unaware of the identities of the minister and his assistant, demanded and accepted Rs 4,000 as a bribe to facilitate darshan of Lord Murugan.

After the alleged incident, Minister Ramesh continued inspections across various parts of the temple. Addressing reporters in Thoothukudi, he clarified, "Only explanation letters have been obtained from those who committed mistakes among the temple officials. No apology letters have been sought. Whoever is found to have committed wrongdoing at the Tiruchendur Subramaniya Swamy Temple will face appropriate action."

He added that further inspections remain to be conducted and promised to share full details upon completion of the review. "Further inspections are yet to be conducted in various parts of the temple. After the completion of the inspection, full details of today's incidents and findings will be provided to you," the minister said.

Earlier, on May 28, Minister Ramesh reaffirmed the government's commitment to secularism and social justice. Speaking at the 1351st Sathaya Festival of Emperor Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar in Othakadai, Trichy, he asserted that the new administration operates beyond the lines of caste and religion, with public support grounded in the leadership of Chief Minister Vijay.
