Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has cancelled his election campaign planned for Monday in Chennai, citing insufficient time allocated by police to travel between campaign locations.
According to party sources, Vijay intended to campaign in the Villivakkam and T Nagar constituencies. Although permission for the campaign was granted, the party claimed the time allowed for moving between the two areas was inadequate.
Due to these time constraints, Vijay chose to call off his campaign activities for the day. The TVK is also considering filing a complaint with the Election Commission regarding the issue. An official statement from the party is pending.
Tamil Nadu will hold its assembly polls in a single phase on April 23, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The main electoral battle is expected between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA)-which includes Congress, DMDK, and the VCK-and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK).
Actor-turned-politician Vijay is making his electoral debut with the TVK, aiming to establish a three-way contest in the elections.
Earlier, on Saturday, Vijay criticised the established political fronts in Puducherry ahead of the Assembly election there. Addressing a large rally, he described the AINRC-BJP alliance as “tired” and the DMK-Congress alliance as “confused.”
Vijay noted that the TVK is contesting in Puducherry for the first time and pledged to strive for full statehood if elected. He questioned why national parties, despite their central government power, have not granted full statehood to Puducherry to date.
He said, “There are 2 alliances in Puducherry… In Tamil Nadu, DMK-Congress is a confused alliance. Similarly, here too it continues to be a confused alliance. Similarly, there is an NR Congress-BJP alliance. It is not a united alliance. It is a tired alliance. Why hasn’t this alliance granted statehood to Puducherry? If we come to power, we will do our best to secure statehood.”
