Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate Seenivasa Sethupathy ended the 20-year dominance of the DMK in the Tiruppattur Assembly constituency by securing victory over DMK's KR Periyakaruppan by a single vote.

Sethupathy credited his success to TVK president and actor Vijay, stating, “My success is all because of Vijay. It shows how important every single vote is.”

At the conclusion of the penultimate round of counting on May 4, Periyakaruppan was leading by 30 votes. In the final round, election officials declared Sethupathy the winner with 83,365 votes, just one vote ahead of Periyakaruppan’s 83,364, marking one of the closest outcomes in Indian electoral history.

Polling for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election occurred on April 23, with a historic voter turnout of 85.12%. Vote counting began on May 4, with TVK candidates initially leading in many constituencies across districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Madurai. Candidates from the DMK and AIADMK alliances also led in various seats statewide.

Within three to four hours, trends emerged in all 234 constituencies, though no party reached the majority threshold of 118 seats required to form the government. TVK crossed the 100-seat mark in leads, becoming the single largest party.

When counting concluded, TVK won 108 seats contesting independently in all constituencies. The DMK alliance secured 73 seats, while the AIADMK alliance won 53. The DMK itself, including candidates and allies under the Rising Sun symbol, won approximately 62 seats, becoming the second-largest party.

TVK president Vijay contested and won two constituencies. He is expected to resign from the Trichy seat and remain MLA for the Chennai Perambur Assembly constituency.

For TVK to form the government, it requires support from at least ten additional MLAs. With no independent MLAs elected, the party can only form a government if either the DMK or AIADMK alliances offer support.
