Police recovered two firearms and three cartridges in the Bhatpara area of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, on Thursday, officials stated.

Two suspects have been apprehended in connection with the seizure.

The operation forms part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal arms in the Barrackpore industrial region. Authorities have confiscated 35 firearms and 51 cartridges over the past three months while arresting 27 individuals linked to such activities.

Police sources reported that since 2019, the areas under Bhatpara, Jagaddal, and Titagarh police stations have become significant hotspots for illegal weapons. These locations lie within the Barrackpore industrial belt, where concerns about the proliferation of illicit arms have persisted.

Despite directives from the state government to curtail the circulation of illegal firearms, such activities continue in these regions. Police efforts are underway to dismantle networks involved in supplying and possessing illegal weapons. Further investigation is ongoing.

In a separate case, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Jalpaiguri Road station detained 14 Bangladeshi nationals-including four women and four minors-onboard the Delhi-bound Northeast Express train, officials said.

The individuals were carrying Aadhaar cards, and a detailed probe has been initiated to determine whether the documents are forged or were obtained illegally.

RPF Inspector Biplab Dutta told ANI that the investigation followed specific intelligence and routine train inspections. “Based on source information, our RPF staff identified several suspected individuals while inspecting trains… Upon verifying their Aadhaar cards, the documents appeared to be fake…” he said.

“Acting on this, we took action regarding 5 men, 5 women, and 4 children. They are all residents of Bangladesh… We recovered fake Aadhaar cards and Malaysian currency… They stated they were travelling to Kashmir for work…” he added.
