The United States and Iran have agreed to a two-week 'double-sided' ceasefire following 40 days of conflict, US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday.
Trump declared a suspension of the “bombing and attack” campaign on Iran and described a 10-point proposal from Iran as a “workable basis” for negotiating a permanent deal.
Trump stated that discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir contributed to his decision to pause military actions. He added that Iran’s agreement to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz” was a condition for the ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic oil transit chokepoint over which Iran maintains control.
“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump said. He noted that the ceasefire would allow time for a permanent agreement to be finalised: “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalised and consummated.” He described it as an honour to have the long-term problem close to resolution on behalf of the US and Middle Eastern countries.
In response, Maulana Yasoob Abbas, General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB), congratulated Iran, declaring that Iran had won the conflict while the US and Israel had lost. “The US used to think of itself as a superpower… On the 40th day, Iran has won, and America and Israel have lost… I congratulate everyone on Iran’s victory,” Abbas told ANI.
Abbas remarked on former statements by Trump threatening destruction of Iranian infrastructure: “Yesterday (Trump) used to make such statements that we will destroy Iran, that we will destroy their gas plants, water plants where water is purified. That we will destroy your bridges and now this.” He characterised the ceasefire as a clear sign of Iran’s success.
