Vishvanath Suresh, India's reigning national flyweight boxing champion, stunned the competition by knocking out World No 1 Sanzhar Tashkenbay of Kazakhstan at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on April 4. The 50 kg flyweight boxer from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, secured his place in the semifinals with this major upset.
Vishvanath had earlier clinched gold at the Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships 2026 by defeating Rishi Singh with a unanimous 5-0 decision, confirming his status as India’s top boxer in the 50 kg division, according to a press release from Asian Boxing.
His rise to prominence has been marked by a successful youth career. Vishvanath claimed gold at the IBA Youth Men’s World Boxing Championships 2022 and at the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships 2022, demonstrating his prowess on both the global and continental stages.
He also won a bronze medal at the Asian U-22 Boxing Championships in 2024 and secured another gold at the BFI Federation Cup 2025 held in Chennai.
Known for his speed, agility, and tactical acumen, Vishvanath excels in controlling distance and delivering quick, precise combinations, traits that have contributed to his effectiveness in the flyweight category.
Training at the Army Sports Institute with support from the Boxing Federation of India and Inspire SSCB, Vishvanath continues to develop as a strong international medal prospect.
