Voting commenced on Thursday morning for assembly by-elections in the Davangere South and Bagalkot constituencies in Karnataka, the Koridang constituency in Nagaland, and the Dharmanagar constituency in Tripura.

In Karnataka, the Congress party has fielded Umesh Meti in Bagalkot and Samarth Mallikarjun in Davangere South. Umesh Meti is the son of the late Congress leader Meti Hullappa Yamanappa (HY Meti), who previously represented Bagalkot. Samarth Mallikarjun is the son of Karnataka Minister SS Mallikarjun. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Veerabhadrayya Charantimath for Bagalkot and Srinivas T. Dasakariyappa for Davangere South. The Bagalkot seat became vacant after the death of HY Meti, while Davangere South was vacated following the death of Shamanur Shivashankarappa.

In Nagaland, Congress candidate T Chalukumba AO is competing against Daochier I Imchen, son of veteran BJP leader Imkong L Imchen, for the Koridang seat. T Chalukumba AO previously contested the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections on a Janata Dal (United) ticket. BJP State Council member Imchainba Jamir withdrew his candidature in favour of Imchen. The Koridang (ST) seat fell vacant after the death of Imkong L Imchen.

In Tripura, the BJP has nominated Jahar Chakraborti for the Dharmanagar seat, running against Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee. Amitabha Datta of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is also contesting. This seat became vacant after the death of Tripura Speaker and four-time MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen.

Polling was also scheduled for a vacant assembly constituency in Goa; however, the Bombay High Court cancelled the Ponda by-election.

The results for the current by-elections will be declared on May 4.

The Election Commission of India had earlier announced the schedule for by-elections across eight assembly constituencies in six states. Polling for bypolls in Umreth (Gujarat), Rahuri, and Baramati (Maharashtra) will be held on April 23, with vote counting also set for May 4.
