Guwahati: A road accident in Assam's Tamulpur district claimed the life of a young and popular Bihu dancer while leaving 11 others from her troupe injured, police said on Saturday.

The victim, Nishamoni Haloi (25), died on the spot after the mini bus she was travelling in collided head-on with a trailer truck in the Noakhata area on Friday night.

She was part of a cultural troupe heading for a Bihu performance in a nearby locality.

Police said around 30 members, including female dancers, male 'dhulias' and other artistes from different parts of the state, were on board the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Eleven of them sustained injuries, with some reported to be in serious condition.

"The critically injured have been shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, while others are undergoing treatment at a local healthcare facility," officials said, adding that the cause of the accident is under investigation.

Haloi was widely known for her performances as a Bihu dancer and as a 'Nagara Naam' artiste.

Her untimely death has cast a pall of gloom among the cultural community and in her native area.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief over the incident, stating that the Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori team from Haribhanga in Nalbari district had met with a fatal accident.

He described Haloi as a promising artiste whose life was cut short and extended condolences to her family while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

Police said the body will be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination.

The incident comes at a time when celebrations of Rongali Bihu are underway across Assam, marking the Assamese New Year with cultural performances and festivities.
