Guwahati: Assam has set an ambitious target of producing 10 lakh litres of milk every day as part of its efforts to strengthen the dairy sector, enhance rural livelihoods and move towards self-sufficiency in milk production.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding the state's dairy industry, describing it as a key pillar of Assam's rural economy. In a post on X, he said the sector contributes significantly to both household nutrition and income generation.
"Every glass of milk nourishes a family and strengthens the rural economy," the Chief Minister said, while outlining the state's vision for the sector.
He added that the government is extending subsidies to more than 25,000 dairy farmers to help improve productivity, raise earnings and build a stronger dairy ecosystem.

To achieve this goal, the government has rolled out a series of measures aimed at increasing milk output through financial support, scientific breeding programmes, improved livestock management and expanded veterinary services.
The initiatives are also intended to encourage farmers to adopt modern dairy practices and invest in quality cattle.
Officials said boosting domestic milk production would reduce Assam's dependence on supplies from other states while creating additional income opportunities for rural households.
They noted that dairy farming has become an important source of supplementary income, particularly for small and marginal farmers.
Government interventions have also focused on improving fodder availability, strengthening milk collection networks and promoting organised dairy farming across the state.
According to a senior government official, expanding milk production is expected to generate employment across the dairy value chain, including processing, transportation and marketing, while also contributing to better nutritional security.
The daily production target forms part of the state's broader strategy to strengthen agriculture and allied sectors.
The Assam government has identified dairy, fisheries and animal husbandry as key areas for driving rural economic growth, increasing farmer incomes and creating sustainable employment opportunities.
Officials remain optimistic that continued policy support and active participation from farmers will help the state achieve its long-term dairy production goals.
