The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated places across Assam and neighbouring states from July 30 to August 1, prompting the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) to issue a public advisory and place emergency agencies on alert.
According to the IMD, the expected spell of intense rainfall could trigger waterlogging, flash floods, disruption of road traffic and localised landslides in vulnerable areas.
In view of the forecast, the ASDMA said district administrations are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and have activated emergency response mechanisms to deal with any adverse developments.
An Orange Alert has been issued for Tinsukia district in Assam. Similar alerts have also been issued for Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts of Nagaland, where heavy rainfall could impact adjoining Assam districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over several districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley.
These weather conditions may affect neighbouring Assam districts such as Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur.
The latest weather advisory comes at a critical time for Assam, which has already witnessed significant loss and displacement.
The ASDMA has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and to stay updated through official weather bulletins and advisories issued by local authorities.
Residents living in low-lying, flood-prone areas and along vulnerable hill slopes have been asked to stay vigilant for signs of flooding, landslides and slope instability.
Authorities said emergency response agencies remain on standby to respond promptly to any situation arising from the adverse weather conditions.
