A team of Assam Police on Tuesday reached the Delhi residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera as part of an inquiry linked to allegations involving Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family, according to official sources.

Upon arriving in the national capital, the Assam Police coordinated with the Delhi Police, who subsequently joined the operation and are assisting with the proceedings.

The move comes against the backdrop of an escalating political confrontation.

Sarma has accused the Congress of relying on what he described as "fabricated inputs" originating from a Pakistani social media network to level allegations against his wife, including claims related to multiple passports and overseas assets.

He has characterised the accusations as an attempt to sway the electoral climate in Assam and warned that such actions could invite legal consequences.

Meanwhile, speaking at a public rally, Sarma claimed that Khera was no longer in either Guwahati or Delhi. "

"He ran away. From media reports, I understand the police visited his Delhi residence, but he has gone to Hyderabad. The law will take its own course," the chief minister said.

The controversy also drew in Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who had raised a series of questions over the allegations.

In response, Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan, issued a statement on social media denying any links to Dubai or foreign assets, a report stated.

She asserted that neither she nor her family members held business interests abroad.

Bhuyan also countered Gogoi with a question of her own, asking whether his wife had ever maintained a bank account in Pakistan and if he would make such details public.

She further pointed to what she described as inconsistencies in the opposition's claims, noting a shift in their narrative regarding passport-related allegations within a short span of time.
