Guwahati: Congress candidate from Assam's Naduar Assembly constituency, Sunil Kumar Chhetri, was injured after unidentified assailants allegedly attacked him while he was campaigning for the upcoming Assembly elections on Monday evening, party leaders said.

The incident took place near the Napam Bypass within the constituency while the candidate's convoy was passing through the area, according to party sources.

The injured candidate, who is contesting from the Naduar Assembly seat, reportedly fell to the ground after the attack and was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

He is set to face senior BJP leader Padma Hazarika in the election.

Chhetri was campaigning in the constituency along with party workers when a group of individuals allegedly attacked them. Several members of the Congress team were also present at the time of the incident.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi strongly condemned the attack and demanded that those responsible be arrested immediately.

Gogoi alleged that workers of the ruling BJP were behind the assault and wished a speedy recovery for Chhetri, who is currently undergoing treatment at Tezpur Medical College.

He also described Chhetri as a prominent representative of the Gorkha community and a former president of the All Assam Gorkha Students' Union, urging the government to ensure adequate security for the Congress candidate and take strict action against those involved.

The Congress further claimed that several others, including senior party spokesperson Rupa Kalita, were injured in the incident and are receiving treatment at Tezpur Medical College.

Meanwhile, sitting BJP MLA Padma Hazarika denied the allegations that BJP workers were involved in the attack. He said he would retire from active politics if Congress could prove the party's involvement and suggested that the incident might have been staged to gain sympathy from voters.
