Imphal: Students of Manipur University staged a protest on Sunday following a bomb blast inside the campus, raising concerns over security.
According to police, the explosion occurred around 7.30 pm on Saturday at the gate of a teachers' residential quarter in the Canchipur area.
The blast damaged a portion of the entrance gate of Quarter No. 8 (Type-5), with splinters found scattered across the site. Five faculty members reside in the quarter, but no injuries were reported.
Security forces temporarily shut the university's main gate for nearly an hour as a precaution while conducting checks across the premises.
Personnel from Singjamei Police Station, along with senior officials including the SDPO and Additional SP of Imphal West district, rushed to the scene soon after the incident.
A forensic team later carried out spot verification and collected evidence.
An investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the blast, with further details awaited.
Meanwhile, Yumnam Khemchand was in Jiribam at the time of the incident, where he met internally displaced persons from Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities to review relief measures.
Stressing the need for communal harmony, he warned that failure to restore peace would have serious consequences for all sections of society, while commending Jiribam residents for their efforts towards reconciliation.
