Agartala: Campaigning for the elections to the 28-member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) concluded on Friday after days of intense political activity across the tribal areas of Tripura, officials said.
The autonomous council covers nearly two-thirds of the state's geographical area and is home to around 13 lakh people, making the polls politically significant for the region.
Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma led an aggressive campaign for the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), which is aiming to retain control of the council. On the other hand, Chief Minister Manik Saha spearheaded the campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the party seeks to capture power in the tribal body.
Polling for all 28 seats of the council is scheduled to be held on April 12 between 7 am and 4 pm. A total of 173 candidates are contesting the elections, while the electorate comprises more than 9.62 lakh voters, according to official figures.
Meanwhile, nearly 97 per cent voter turnout was recorded in postal ballots during the two-day voting process held on April 7 and 8. The counting of votes will take place on April 17.
