Guwahati: Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, on Tuesday alleged that workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party from other states have entered Assam in large numbers to cast votes in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters during a roadshow in Jorhat, where he is contesting his first Assembly election, Gogoi claimed that several BJP workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar had arrived in Assam and that their names had allegedly been added to the electoral rolls. He questioned whether such individuals should be allowed to influence the political future of the state.
The Congress leader also criticised the state police for allegedly allowing large numbers of outsiders to enter the poll-bound state without proper verification. He urged citizens to remain alert and keep a close watch during the election process.
Voting for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly is scheduled to take place on Thursday. The Congress is attempting to regain power in the state after nearly a decade of rule by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government.
Gogoi further accused the ruling government of misgovernance, alleging that it had handed over land and allowed large-scale misuse of public funds while ordinary people were being exploited. He called on voters to stay vigilant and protect their rights.
Echoing similar concerns, Mira Borthakur Goswami, Congress candidate from Dispur and president of the party's state women's wing, also raised the issue on social media.
In a post on Facebook, she claimed that buses arriving from Bihar were seen on the roads and appealed to citizens to closely monitor polling stations. She urged the public to remain watchful and prevent any wrongdoing during the elections.
Earlier, the Congress had also expressed concerns over the special revision of electoral rolls conducted in the state ahead of the polls. The final electoral roll, published on February 10 after the revision exercise, recorded around 2.49 crore voters, marking a 0.97 per cent decrease compared to the draft roll.
