Guwahati: A day after senior Congress leader Pawan Khera raised a series of serious allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the chief minister on Monday dismissed the claims as fabricated and alleged that they were based on misinformation circulated by a Pakistani social media group.
Speaking at a press conference, Sarma said the accusations that his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds multiple passports and owns properties in Dubai were completely false. He claimed that the allegations were part of an attempt to influence the outcome of the upcoming Assam assembly elections.
He also alleged that Pakistan was trying to influence the outcome of the Assam elections.
The controversy erupted after Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi questioned whether his wife or family owns property in Dubai, has companies in the USA, or has placed their assets in shell companies.
Sarma responded that making such claims during the election period with the intent of affecting poll results was "punishable under law".
The chief minister further alleged that the documents cited by the Congress to support the claims were sourced from a social media group called "Pakistanis in Ajman". According to him, the documents were manipulated and even included a morphed photograph of his wife on a lost passport belonging to another individual.
"I am concerned that they took the help of Pakistan. This is not a simple fraud case but a crime against the nation," he said.
He also claimed that Pakistan was attempting to influence the Assam elections, stating that the general narrative of at least 11 TV talk shows was that the Congress party should win.
Sarma added that his wife had already filed a complaint against Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, and said he expected the police to register a case and initiate legal proceedings.
The chief minister also criticised Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, saying it was unfortunate that he had joined in making what Sarma described as baseless allegations against his wife.
On Sunday, Khera had alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possessed passports from the UAE, Egypt and Antigua & Barbuda and owned two properties in Dubai while holding assets through shell companies.
