Dry days declared in three Manipur border districts ahead of Assam Assembly polls

The Manipur government has announced dry days in three districts bordering Assam in view of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

Sale and consumption of liquor will remain prohibited during this period to ensure free and fair elections in Assam.

According to a notification issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Excise, Manipur on Monday, the dry days will be in force from 5:00 pm on April 7 to 5:00 pm on April 9.

During this period, a temporary prohibition on the sale and distribution of alcohol will be in effect in Tamenglong, Jiribam, and Pherzawl, the three districts bordering Assam.

The directive, issued under Section 135C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and Section 17(3) of the Eastern Bengal & Assam Excise Act, 1910 (as applicable in Manipur), prohibits the sale, service, and distribution of liquor across all licensed establishments, including retail outlets, bars, and hotels.

"In pursuance of section 135C of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951 and in exercise of the power conferred under section 17(3) of Eastern Bengal & Assam Excise Act, 1910 as extended in the State of Manipur, "Dry Day" is hereby declared in the following districts of Manipur, neighbouring with poll bound State i.e. Assam, from 5:00 PM of 7th April 2026 to 5:00 PM of 9th April, 2026 (Poll day) in connection with General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Assam 2026: Tamenglong, Jiribam, and Pherzawl," the notification read.

A "Dry Day" in certain districts bordering Assam had been declared in view of the upcoming Legislative Assam Assembly Elections 2026.
