Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday unveiled a memorial stone in remembrance of victims of the 1943 aerial bombing at Khurai Chingambam Leikai in Imphal East, marking the 83rd anniversary of the tragic World War II.
The bombing, carried out by Japanese forces on April 20, 1943, is remembered as the Khurai Chingangbam Mandop Aerial Bombing, which claimed the lives of more than 100 civilians and left a lasting impact on Manipuri society.
Paying tribute to the civilians, CM Khemchand described the incident as a painful chapter in the state's history and led attendees in offering Tarpan to the departed souls.
He noted that such commemorations serve a reminder of the sacrifices and suffering endured during the war years.
Referring to the larger context of World War II, he highlighted the significance of the Battle of Imphal in 1943-44, one of the fiercest battles fought between the Allied forces and Japanese Army, resulting in over 20,000 casualties.
He added that the government would consider a proposal to recognise the historic bombing site as a heritage location. A commemorative souvenir was also released during the programme. A commemorative souvenir was also released to mark the occasion.
The Chief Minister urged the public to maintain calm and cooperation, noting that bandhs and disruptions cause hardship to the daily wage earners and the general public. He also stressed the importance of peace, unity, and collective responsibility.

Speaking in connection to recent Tronglaobi incident, CM Khemchand said the government has taken the matter seriously and held meetings with the Joint Action Committee on two occasions.
He further stated that the concerns of the public have been acknowledged and that support measures, including possible government jobs to both the parents of the deceased kids.
Later, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the construction of a women market shed at New Checkon in Imphal. The market shed will strengthen local infrastructure and provide improved facilities for women vendors in the area.
The event was attended by Art and Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar Singh, Director of Health Services, Manipur Dr. N. Hemantakumar Singh, along with members of the Chingangbam Mandop Sevayat Committee, the 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation, and other dignitaries.
